Birmingham BAPS Community Centre – Temple
Regeneration of an existing community building, into a multi-purpose community centre and a religious Temple complex. The building contains halls, classrooms, dining areas and kitchens and is surrounded by open spaces used for recreation and sport. Weekly classes are held here, tailoring to a variety of ages to promote community spirit and uphold cultural and religious values. The design aims to hold 2,000 people at capacity.
The style is inspired by traditional Indian architecture, combining the ancient and the modern. This is done over two floors, through GRC domes and pinnacles, known as shikars, and traditional brickwork. The building is structured in a courtyard format with zoning in place for different activities. This includes corridors that are streets of activity, connecting various spaces and functions in the building. The decorative colonade ties the building together to create a logical movement system.
